2018 Pumpkin Seed Lineup is Now Set

Thanks to the kindness of others, I have my seed lineup set for next year.   I'll be plantinga 2145 McMulllen (1756 Howell/Jullivette x 1625 Gantner), a 1974 McConkie (2261 Wallace x Self) and a 1764 McConkie (1937 Urena x 2261 Wallace).  Basically if there isn't a capital M in the middle of the growers last name then I won't grow it.  lol

I'm really excited to start these seeds next year.  Like I talked about in my last post, the 2145 has been the best performing seed ever (hope I got one of those).  The two McConkie seeds I think have similar potential.  I saw both plants and they were very impressive growers.  In particular the plant that grew the 1974 was a very aggressive grower and I like that.  In my cooler climate I need the plants to get as big as they can as fast as they can.

Hi Jamie.. I'm a new grower in New Jersey.. Find your blog really, really helpful...My nephew and I started a few years ago with a $1 packet of seeds and now will be getting serious with 2 2363 Holland seeds (2145 McMullen X 2261 Wallace)

John I think those 2363 seeds will do vert well for you. Some great genetics on both side.

Thank you Jamie.. I'm not a big social media person.. But I can keep you updated during next season if you are interested

I meant to ask you to do that in my last comment, but I forgot. Would love to see how that plant does for you. Make sure you get that soil prepped as early as you can. What you put into that soil in the Fall and Spring makes a huge difference during the season.

I have cover crop of winter rye in there now... will get a soil test in March... I also used NPK products this past year for first time.. was getting great results with a Hollands seed from a 5-700lb pumpkin.. Had OTT measurement of 217" after 35 days... But then made a huge booboo which killed the fruit..(tap roots re=established which played tug of war with stem until vine split) I will keep u updated

That sounds like a great pumpkin. Nothing wrong with 217" at 35 days your rookie year. There are about 1,000 things that can mess up a pumpkin during the season and half of growing a giant pumpkin is about figuring out how to mitigate those problems before they happen (if you can). Maybe after 10 years I'm finally starting to figure it out. This last year was the first time I was able to get all of my pumpkins to the scale undamaged in probably 5 years. I think just over half of all of my pumpkins got lost to disease or splits. Kind of a brutal sport. Lol

Yes it is brutal lol.. But the lesson I learned is "daily vigilance"...I'm also going to try a technique I saw in a Mark Clementz youtube video where he put the pulled tap roots into old socks filled with soil...
